Christmas according to... Finlay & Co.

21st December 2015

With just four sleeps 'til Christmas, we're excited to catch up with Dave Lochhead, one of the founding members from designer eyewear label, Finlay & Co. But first let's take a look at what's under the tree for Dave's family this year...

Hi Dave, thanks for chatting with us today. Looking back over the busy year you've had, what's been your best moment from 2015?

Launching into five Barney's stores in the US has been by far our biggest highlight at Finlay & Co. To have a curated collection of our frames on sale in one of the worlds top department stores is a dream come true for us. But then we've also had some big names wear our frames this year which is always a massive compliment. Emma Stone, Gigi Hadid and Vanessa Hudgens have all been wearing Finlay over the summer.

Wow, exciting times. Where do you guys get your inspiration from?

Well each design comes with its own dash of inspiration - our Thurlow frames which are round with accentuated temples were inspired by the sweeping wheel arches of old classic cars. Our Draycott frames, which are almost perfectly spherical, borrow design elements from the vintage pashley bicycles. With some of our styles we like to take a classic shape such as a clubmaster shape and give it the Finlay & Co. treatment by reinventing it with a combination of luxurious hardwood and gold metal frames. In 2016, we will be launching our first aviator style, which has been three years in the making - so keep an eye on our website!

What are your plans for Christmas this year?

I will be celebrating Christmas early this year as my brother and sister-in-law are visiting from Canada so I've had to be on it with my Christmas shopping. We'll be spending time together in my native Scotland, eating, going on lots of walks and I'm hoping for a bit of winter sunshine as they're all getting a pair of personalised, engraved Finlay frames!

Sounds good, they'll love them! Is there anything in particular you're hoping for this Christmas?

I have recently been introduced to the David Gandy collection for M&S and I have to say I'm a big fan! I wouldn't say no to another super soft t-shirt from the collection for Christmas! But ultimately, a cosy Christmas day with all of my family that I don't get to see that much anymore would be perfect.

What are some of your favourite Christmas traditions you're looking forward to?

Our annual Finlay Christmas party of course! There will probably be a fair amount of eating and ping pong playing on the cards, although I'm not sure in which order! One of my other musts is a carol service on Christmas Eve, nothing gets you into the spirit more that a sing song of 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing'!

“There will probably be a fair amount of eating and ping pong playing on the cards, although I'm not sure in which order!”

Totally agree. Finally, what can we expect from Finlay & Co. in 2016?

Next year is going to be a big year for us, we're launching new styles in new colour and lens combinations! We're going to be introducing gradient lenses which fade from one colour to another for a real retro feel. Our biggest news however, is that we'll be launching our first prescription eyewear collection. It's a natural progression for us as a brand and whilst we're still working on the finishing touches (choosing the right shapes and materials) we're super excited about extending our collection into the world of optical.

Thanks Dave!
