This week saw the Emma J Shipley team head down to Chelsea College of Art, where Texprint were showcasing the work of 24 talented textile graduate designers from all of Britain's top art colleges. Texprint is an organisation run by industry professionals who select, mentor and promote the best in graduate textile designers whilst equipping them with all the necessary skills and contacts to succeed in a career in textiles.
Back in 2011, Emma was lucky enough to be one of the final 24 designers and to win the Texprint pattern prize - as a result, Emma's work was showcase at Premiere Vision in Paris, as well as at the Spinexpo trade fair in Shanghai. Through Texprint sponsorship, she also had the opportunity to travel to Lake Como in Italy, to visit the traditional print and silk mills and meet industry professionals. This year, Emma was asked back to Texprint London to be the featured alumni and showcase a selection of scarves, prints and collaborations.
We also had a chance to meet some of the 24 textile graduates and view their work up close and chat to them in person about their collection and future plans. Here's our top 4 from Texprint 2014!
A recent RCA graduate, Flett's work was inspired by shells and their organic form. We particularly admired her use of coloured and stitched cord to create beautiful shapes that translate into a dramatic, curved effect.
A fellow RCA graduate as well, Jessica's fluorescent colours and translucent textures instantly got our attention - we were also particularly impressed by her inspiration boards full of sketches of fish and sealife that informed her collection.
Even though Tali admitted that fashion drawings weren't her forté, her simple and stylish illustrations were expertly done and we loved the luxurious monochrome and orange coat creations.
James' pencil and ink drawings of birds and flowers were littered with scissors, syringes and other medical paraphernalia - a detail that gave his beautifully delicate work a darker and far more interesting edge.
Here are a few other favourites we managed to take a look at during this week's showcase...
Emma also managed to grab a quick picture with Peter Ring-Lefevre, the creative director of Texprint who was sporting an Emma J Shipley Amazon print scarf in wool!
Overall it was great to see so much textile talent and a huge amount of support from the lovely team at Texprint, who pile all their time and energy into nurturing and promoting design talent year after year. The 24 designers will shortly travel to Premiere Vision in Paris, where they will showcase their work and the 4 Texprint prize winners will be announced. Watch this space as we have a feeling these graduates will be ones to watch in the industry...
